My Story

“I’m Stephanie Skeete

and I am Hairfyx!”

Stephanie Skeete

Hairfyx Founder & Owner

Hairdressing has always been a passion of mine. From the age of 9 I remember playing with my family's hair and begging them to let me comb it, put hair bands in it, let me do something, anything to their hair and from there my interest and curiosity grew. Soon after this I quickly learned how to braid and my creativity as far as braiding was unmatched.

By the time I reached secondary school, I was braiding all my friends’ hair at lunchtime for sweets and drinks! (LOL) It’s true to say my friends and family were my first guinea pigs and in turn my support system.

Upon leaving school with 11 GCSE’S A –C, I knew I wanted to pursue hairdressing so I started my NVQ level 2 & 3 in european and afro hairdressing. I thoroughly enjoyed the course, it was my first taste of working in a professional salon environment and learning the principles and science behind hairdressing, which was inspiring to me.

Once I completed my NVQ I went on to further education and completed a HND in salon management. I have to thank my mom for the push as she ‘kindly’ told me after my NVQ I WILL be going to UNI, that was all I needed to make the decision to go. I then topped up my HND into a full degree and gained a BA HONS in Business Enterprise.

I was 21 by the time I finished full-time education. Throughout my education, I maintained a part-time job in a salon and also did mobile hairdressing. Early mornings and late nights where my routine and I loved it, although tiring at times I was completely living my dream and learning everything I could.

After 5 years in the salon as an employee I took a big leap and decided to go self-employed. I was only 22 and at the time I know a lot of people around me thought I was too young but I knew it was the right decision for me and the right time. I have never looked back or regretted it.

After racking my brain for a name I decided on ‘Hairfyx’. I remember sitting down with my sister and I said to her I think I’ve found a name, I told her and showed her the spelling. She wasn’t keen on the spelling, to say the least, but I explained I liked the way it looked on paper and the different spelling made it unique. She understood and was then onboard and the rest is history.

From 22-25 I rented a small space near my home where I grew my business. I had the full support of my previous manager who forwarded my information to clients that asked, as well as overwhelming support from the community. I found myself being recommended via word of mouth to everyone’s families, friends and work colleagues etc. I was truly blessed. Before I knew it I had a solid client base and business was going well.

Whilst growing my business I dived back into education at 24 and completed an A1 Assessors Award.

After a few complications with the space I was renting I then set out to find my own salon. This was a hard decision which came with a lot of responsibility but I thought in order to progress you have to strive for success.

I opened my 1st salon on December 3rd 2016 at the age of 26 ‘ Hairfyx salon ’, a day I remember like yesterday. Opening my salon has been an overwhelming experience. Being in control of the experience you are providing to customers and tailoring the experience to suit them gives me a great sense of pride.

After running a successful salon for 3 years at the age of 29 I found myself again returning to education. I studied male hair replacement which led me to consider barbering and in September 2019 I enrolled onto an NVQ Course - Level 3 Barbering, to which I was awarded a merit.

I continued working full time whilst studying and since returning back to education I realised that constantly strengthening your skills and learning new services that you can offer clients is rewarding in itself.

This brings us to the current time! I am now age 30 and have continued to not only further my education but broaden the services available within the salon.

My passion for education and my natural creative flare have allowed me to express myself through each client.
Hairfyx is exactly that! As I like to say; “get your hairfyx’d”.

It has been a blessing thus far working in the industry and I see the future opening many doors and I'm excited for it.

Thank you to all my past and current clients for the continued support as well as my family, friends and the community and know we are always striving to strengthen not only our skillset but our knowledge in hairdressing and above all maintain honest communication.
